The San Diego International Airport is currently undergoing significant construction to expand and modernize its terminal one. As a result, the United Airlines Historic Terminal (UAHT) building at the southern edge of the terminal one project will be displaced. Through local advocacy efforts, the UAHT building will be relocated to the opposite side of the airport, along Pacific Coast Highway and Palm Avenue. The building was constructed in 1937 and holds significant historical value as the last remaining building from the airports opening. Its relocation will preserve its historic significance while accommodating the airport’s modernization.

RE Services staff was responsible for developing a landscape study plan and design guidelines for the project. The guidelines call for a thematic, sustainable design that is contextual to surrounding airport landscapes, using a drought-tolerant plant palette to enhance the site while conserving water with the use of high-efficiency irrigation systems.
