Island Avenue Mini Park
San Diego, CA

DESCRIPTION

The Island Avenue Mini Park Project was a long-overdue and complete renovation of this public park site in the Grant Hill neighborhood. With an approximate 30-foot change in elevation from the park entrance to the opposite end and situated on a narrow, 0.25 -acre parcel, the site presentenced significant design challenges to ensure slope stability and full ADA accessibility throughout the park. Replacing minimal and outdated play equipment, the improvements included new play equipment, a turf area, mini amphitheater, sheltered picnic area, security lighting, stormwater improvements, retaining walls, decorative planting, and new irrigation systems.

As the Project Manager/Landscape Architect, RES staff members, David Preciado and Jaime Sandoval, led the consultant team for the City of San Diego to develop the design and preparation of construction documents for this GDP amended site. The unique footprint and grading of the park necessitated the development of highly technical set construction documents created through close collaboration between RES staff and the subconsultants to provide full ADA access throughout the park. Upon its completion in late-2022, the park will provide welcome play space for neighborhood families in this once unused space.

The project will be completed in the Fall of 2022 with a total project cost of $3.2 million.
