Uptown Bikeway / Pride Plaza & Promenade, University Ave and Normal Street
San Diego CA

DESCRIPTION

As part of the SANDAG’s Regional Bikeway Projects, the Uptown Bikeway project was a collaborative effort between the City of San Diego, the community, and SANDAG. The project features Pride Promenade, a half-mile long, multi-use space that will run parallel to the Normal Street segment of the bikeway and will include enhanced ‘waves’ hardscape design representing the ‘ebbs and flows’ of society’s local acceptance of LGBTQ community, historically, over the last 60 years. The promenade is intended to host many civic events including the annual Pride Parade, weekly Farmers’ Market, annual bike events, and art walks. The design allows for the flexible-use open plaza, low informal ‘stages’ for event entertainment, bioretention swales and trees alleys to provide division from the main promenade and seating along the western edge. Historical trolley cars shall be permanently placed along the promenade to provide local business opportunities while paying homage to the rich transit history of the Normal Street corridor. Pride Plaza at the corner of University Avenue and Normal Street was re-envisioned to create a strongly delineated circular core space and will feature a bold pattern of enhanced lithocrete paving, patterned as a ‘vortex’ of color that will generate the ‘waves’ carried throughout the promenade.
